Couples Photography

Couples photography is a name now given to a portrait session taken to celebrate a couple’s commitment to each other. In days gone by we had engagement portraits as a precursor to wedding photographs.  Now the numbers of weddings seem to be in decline, but couples are living together just the same, the fact that they are not married it is no less a commitment to each other and they are booking portrait sessions with professional photographers  for no other reason that they want good quality modern portraits together celebrating their life together. Add to that what could be more fun than having a portrait taken with your significant other! This be be a portrait that will have value as a gift to family and friends as well as one that the couple will cherish for a lifetime.

This can be a very liberating style of photography; it hasn’t got a formal style or requirement to it, as in say showing the engagement ring was in a formal engagement portrait. Today’s couples want a portrait with a modern outlook, if it is taken in a photographic studio it is usually a plain white background, these pictures are often high contrast images with a few changes of outfits maybe finishing with one or the other without a shirt or top on but still a discreet image that mums or dads would be happy with!

Black and White Couples Photography.

Thanks to modern digital photography we can choose how each individual image is printed; colour, monochrome or otherwise. A black and white monochrome image is often selected from couples portrait photography it becomes a great ‘in your face’ stand alone image that looks fantastic on any wall but especially a home with modern decor. Equally the same image could be printed in colour to please the grandparents. Having this range of choices keeps all the family happy each with their own version of the portrait.

Outdoor Portraits.

Couples photography is not limited to a studio image it works perfectly as an environmental portrait anywhere; there is no limit to where they could have their portraits taken, on a beach, in a woodland, by a river, a park, a city, a club or a bridge in fact the only limiting factor is your imagination. Any situation can make a great backdrop for a modern couple’s portrait. As already mentioned this makes this particular branch of portraiture very liberating and refreshing, as photographers we don’t always get this chance of freedom and must take every opportunity to make each couples portrait as unique as possible.

Portrait photography couples images are fast becoming an important element of the photographers workload, the benefit of this is this work can be carried out on any day of the year in a very relaxed way, getting great portraits that the couples and their families will want to buy from them as well as making great Christmas or birthday presents for family members if required.

Often people who work in the wedding industry complain that as numbers of weddings are dropping so their business is also reducing, but with couples photography many photographers are replacing this drop in wedding business with an increase in couples portraits.

Couples photography is a great relaxed style of portraiture that is enjoyable for both the couple and the photographer fun without stress that results in portraits that everyone involved will love and want to give as very individual gifts to family and friends.
